Aluminum vs Steel

Aluminum-steel-common-alloy-(2).jpgAluminum
• Commonly used in seacoast environments
– Expands twice as much as metallic coated steel in thermal movement
– Flashing details must allow for movement
– Best practice is typically 1/8” per 10’ per 1000 temperature change
Steel
• Recommended minimal distance to seacoast environments is typically one mile or greater
• Best practice is typically 1/16” per 10’ per 1000 temperature change
Metallic Coated Steel Specifications
• Galvanized Steel for pre-paint applications
– Galvanized steel sheet, ASTM A 653, G90 coating
• 55% Al-Zn coated sheet with acrylic coating (Galvalume® Plus)
– AZ-55 coating weight
– 55% Aluminum-zinc coated steel sheet with acrylic coating, ASTM A 792
• 55% Al-Zn coated sheet (Galvalume®) for pre-paint applications
– AZ-50 coating weight
– 55% Aluminum-zinc coated steel sheet, ASTM A 792
Proper Cutting Techniques
• Steel
– Shearing
– Snips
– Nibbler
• Aluminum
– Same as steel but specially designed circular saw blades are
available and acceptable to cut aluminum
