In the heart of the Smokey Mountains, the city of Gatlinburg, Tennessee attracts tourists from all corners of the world. Prime eating establishments are necessary in such an area, and the Copper Cellar Corporation based in Knoxville, Tennessee realized the potential that Gatlinburg offers.

Johnson Architecture of Knoxville was retained to provide full architectural services for a new concept restaurant. “ The design intent of the Cherokee Grill Restaurant was to evoke the feeling of being rustic and natural while using new types of materials and methods.”

ATAS International Inc. provided their CastleTop, a 16” square diamond shaped tile in natural copper for the project. The architects selected the panel “due to its natural color changing properties and the old world style of the pattern.” According to Robert Lundin of Johnson Architecture, “It is the perfect complement to the building, which is comprised of predominately natural materials.”

At the same time, the Copper Cellar Corporation was looking for a replacement roof for their other restaurant in Gatlinburg, the Smoky Mountain Brewery. This chalet-type building that houses a restaurant and microbrewery was originally roofed with cedar shake. ATAS International’s stone-coated metal tile panel, Granutile, in Onyx (black) was selected to complement the architectural style of the building.

Craig Belitz of Belitz Construction in Knoxville installed the metal panels on both projects. Design Tech Associates of Lenoir City, Tennessee was the supplier.
