Can ATAS profiles be applied to open framing or only a solid substrate?

ATAS International, Inc. manufacturers metal roof systems that are considered structural and non-structural in nature. Actual panel profile and gauge of the material will determine if the panel has structural capability to span over open framing.  Consult individual product data sheets to see if the profile desired is considered a structural panel system.

Can you walk on the roof?

Most metal panel systems can support the load of an individual walking on them.  As with any roof system care must be taken  to not cause damage to the roof due to abrasion or collapsing of raised portion of the panel.  Appropriate OSHA approved safety procedures should also be followed.

Does metal attract lightning?

Lightning is attracted to the highest point, not necessarily metal.  A metal roof has no greater chance of being hit by lightning than any other type of roof.  However, if your roof would be struck by lightning, a metal roof can help prevent your home from catching on fire because it can dissipate the electrical charge.  More importantly, it is noncombustible.

How can I purchase touch up paint?

Touch up paint is available from ATAS to repair any slight surface scratched on the panel.  A specialist in the recoating of metal products should be consulted if a large area of the roof is required to be repaired.

How does metal hold up in high winds?

Metal roof systems when installed properly, offer a high degree of resistance to the forces of nature.  These include resistance to wind uplift, fire and impact.  Metal roof systems have been installed throughout the world in some of the harshest climate conditions.

How far can I span with metal roofing?

Span capability of a panel is dependent upon profile, gauge and width of the panel itself.  Consult individual load tables and test results to see if the panel meets the actual performance requirements for your project.

How heavy is metal roofing?

Metal roof systems in most cases weigh between 1 to 3 pounds per square foot.  The actual weight is dependent upon metal gauge and profile of the panel.  Metal roof systems are considered a lightweight roof covering compared to their counterparts.  An example of this would be our ScanRoof and Techo Tile panels that are tile facsimiles of traditional clay or concrete tiles.  These systems weigh no more than 1.5 pounds per square foot versus their traditional counterparts that weigh often in excess of 9 pounds per square foot.

How much does a metal roof cost?

A metal roof offers a building owner a long life system that requires a minimal amount of maintenance.  Over the life of a roof, metal is probably the most economical system available.  Traditional roofing materials have a limited life expectancy before one is faced with the expense as well as the disruption of daily activities associated with replacement.  Traditional roof systems have a high degree of maintenance required to perform as expected over the anticipated life.  With a high quality metal roof system, maintenance is minor, therefore maintenance costs are almost non-existent.

Is metal fire resistant?

Yes, metal is a fire resistant material.  For more information contact our offices.

Is metal impact resistant?

Metal is a preferred roofing material in hail prone areas.  Hail causes extensive damage to roofs because it can break, split and cause tear-off of traditional roofing materials.  However, hail will not penetrate a metal roof.  In the severest case, the various styles and finishes available in metal roofing can help camouflage potential cosmetic damage.

What is the minimum roof slope for metal roofing?

ATAS International Inc. manufactures a wide variety of panel systems to meet a variety of slope requirements.  Information regarding minimum slope requirements can be found on the specific technical Data Sheet for each product.  Typically, metal panel systems are considered to be “hydrostatic” in nature and these systems can be applied to slopes of ½:12 (consistent with guidelines published by NRCA) or “hydrokinetic” in nature and require slopes of 2:12 and above.  Actual minimum slopes may be dependent upon roof geometry, substrate, and physical location of the project.

What snow guard systems do you recommend?

Snow retention systems are often incorporated into metal roof system.  These systems are used to retain snow on the roof for protection as well as water management.  The actual style of snow guards to be used may be dependent upon the panel style as well as the aesthetic nature of the snow guard itself.  Consult with your ATAS representative or independent snow guard manufacturer to select the appropriate snow guard for your roof.

Won’t metal rust or its finish fade?

ATAS International Inc. utilizes high quality premium base metals in the manufacturing of its products.  All panels are produced from a minimum of G90 galvanized steel.  Galvanized steel describes a steel product with a metallic coating that inhibits corrosion of the steel itself.  These products have a proven history in field performance.  In addition, ATAS International Inc. produces panels in aluminum, copper, zinc as well as stainless steel for areas in which corrosion is of extreme concern.  Actual product performance is dependent upon the environmental conditions they may be subject to.  The premium paint coatings that are applied to steel and aluminum are designed to resist chalking and fading.  In addition, the most sophisticated pretreatment systems are utilized in the paint application process that further enhance corrosion protection of the base metals.

What does 70% PVDF mean?

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is popularly known by its original trade name, Kynar. Years of testing demonstrate that PVDF is most durable when it makes up 70% of the overall coating. Several companies sell 50% PVDF formulations that are less costly, but the performance drops off considerable. Only 70% versions may be sold under the Kynar 500® or Hylar 5000® trade names.
